Language Diversity - 1563 Words

P age |1 Janine Wiggill( Student No:30147794) Unit 1: Language as a process Assignment 02 Observe Interview / Exploring language diversity where you live Task 1: Observe your community I live on a farm in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands. I spent three mornings on a building site observing three builders from the local community at work. (please refer to Image 1 below) IMAGE 1 â€Å"SPARAK , HAMILTON AND SIMPHIWE ON A BUILDING SITE IN LIDGETTON, KZN MIDLANDS Prior to spending time observing the men, I approached them and introduced myself to them. I greeted them in isiZulu and I asked if they understood English. Due to the fact that isiZulu is spoken more widely in KZN, South Africa than Sesotho, it was not as necessary / important for Hamilton to learn how to communicate in Sesotho, as much as it was for Sparak and Simphiwe to learn how to communicate in isiZulu. Why are they acting / behaving in certain ways? During their lunch break on day two, I noticed that Sparak and Simphiwe each had a brightly coloured blanket which they wrapped around their shoulders. They sat down, flat on the grass, and ate thei r lunch (consisting of spinach, potato and â€Å"pap†, which is a stiff, mealie meal), using their fingers to scoop their food into their mouths. No other eating utensils were used. Simphiwe, the younger of the two Sotho’s, treated the older Sparak, with much respect. This was evident when I observed that he waited for Sparak to sit down first, he handed Sparak his lunch, and he fetched water for Sparak to drink. Hamilton joined Sparak and Simphiwe for lunch. However, he sat on a low wooden bench and he didn’t have a bright blanket wrapped around his shoulders. The lunch that Hamilton was eating was samp and beans. (Traditional Zulu meal). Hamilton ate his lunch with a spoon. He did not eat with his hands at all. The three men very willingly offered and shared their lunch with each other. I read up on the manner in which the three men behaved and I learnt the following: It is part ofShow MoreRelatedDiversity Among Children In Language And Development .1797 Words   |  8 PagesDiversity Among Children in Language and Development Children from across the world come to America with their parents to chase the American dream. Persuasive Essay About Makeup - 1093 Words

Holidays such as Halloween seem to allow deviant acts to be committed with no consequences. However, I committed a deviant act that would have been okay for Halloween but not two weeks before Halloween. I did my makeup like a deer. Nothing extreme, yet bold enough to get a few stares and people to notice. This change in makeup although subtle seemed to make a great change in how people looked at me and treated me. Makeup seems normal and like it’s overall been accepted as a society, however, the current makeup trends call for â€Å"on fleek† or â€Å"no makeup looks,† not quite for random animals. Within the United States, beauty is a high standard. That is why many choose to wear makeup to enhance their beauty not makeup to make themselves appear†¦show more content†¦The perception people have of OfficeMax as an expensive school supply store is inaccurate. If prices were actually compared to other stores they would be much lower and if they werenâ€⠄¢t the store would price match them. This perception might more have to do with how the majority of clients that are within the facility work in office jobs. This is a logical explanation since most come to buy large quantities of office supplies or get 100’s of copies done. This perception of the store being a high maintenance store with nice clientele is why it was a great choice to break some norms. I began by working the floor. I would greet customers and ask if they needed any help finding anything. I mostly got stares back and a simple no. Most people did not want my help, which is quite odd since on a Friday night we are usually pretty packed and Im flooded with questions. After a while of waiting for a lady finally taps my shoulder in need of assistance. I turn to her and ask what she needs help with. I turn to see a startled face that wasn’t expecting a girl pretending to be a deer. She suddenly becomes uncomfortable and comments on how she wasn’t exp ecting that. She then asks me if it’s something all the employees are doing. I explain that it’s not and that I chose to do this. Which leaves her confused. Market Orientation and Business Performance †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Market Orientation and Business Performance. Answer: Introduction: Franchising is the business format where a company allows another firm to sell and market its products within a specified geographical area. The first party is called franchisor while the second party is called franchisee. The relationship between franchisor and franchisee is governed by written contracts between them which specify the terms and conditions of it. The business model is very successful because it encourages new business firms to sell and market branded products of other firms and earn high profit. This model has emerged as a successful foreign expansion strategy and is followed in a number of industries like fast food by international companies like KFC. The model no doubt is the theme of several literary articles and internal magazines. Franchising is based on contract between the franchisor and the franchisee. The contract mentions important conditions like sharing of profit, franchising fees and provision of training to the franchisees staffs, if any (Buchan et al., 2015). Thus it creates a transparent framework which enforces the two parties carry out dynamic business operations which ensures capital maximization for both. Perigot Pnard (2013) in their work state that internet has allowed the franchisors locate franchisees in the foreign markets more easily. This enriches the literature of the internal magazine and adds new matter to it. The franchisors and the franchisee can communicate more easily over the internal platform through video conference and hold meetings to handle urgent situations. This allows the international fast food brands like KFC to manage and collaborate with their franchisees on a larger scale and ensure deeper market penetration even in the foreign markets. KFC follows business model fra nchises and allows the franchisee to market the products and the trademark. Lam et al., (2014) while discussing the advantages of the model in his work stated that franchising results in the flow of foreign goods and capital in the host countries. The franchisee is able to market the products of KFC and earn high profits. KFC is able to market its high quality products like chicken snacker and burger through the franchisee. KFC follow a very intelligent strategy to ensure that it is able to serve a huge customer base and earn profit high profit simultaneously. Stahel and Clift (2016) in their work add that franchising helps the saturated economies to gain foreign resources which help to accelerate economic development. The work of Lee (2016) further strengthens the literature of Lam et al through his work. KFC uses scientific process of preparing tasty food products which creates customer satisfaction. The fast food chains like KFC promote their products through existing menu, gift coupons, KFC Tshirts and large display outside the outlet. Thus franchisee mo del accommodates a strong marketing model which allows the franchisor and the franchisee to earn huge profit. van Tongeren and Stolwijk, (2013) says that KFC markets its products and receives orders online and hence helps the ecommerce companies to earn revenue. It appears it is one way scope to earn profit given to the ecommerce companies by KFC. However, it is two way relationships between KFC and ecommerce companies where both profit. Eriksson Tenflt (2015) state that ecommerce provides a sales platform which allows franchisors like KFC to sell their products globally to earn huge profits. Ecommerce companies like Amazon provides the companies like KFC a platform to promote their products and enhance their brand image. Thus, the ecommerce companies and the producing companies help each other to earn huge profits. Franchising as a business model has great significance because it creates value for the stakeholders and maximizes capital of the shareholders. The fact draws strength from the work of Maak, Boreck Pless (2014). They state in their work that franchising model ensures operation in responsible ways to meet the demands of all the stakeholders like government, customers, employees and shareholders. KFC manages its franchisees after its own international business model which ensures that they provide customers with world class food items and services befitting the fame of KFC. The franchisor maintains a high quality core product like great taste, highly quality chicken and spices and so on. The KFC products applie optional pricing and mixed bundling pricing. The products of KFC are affordable to customers and they come in combinations which increases the customers value of money. The staffs at KFC outlets are well trained and attend to customers in professional ways. Thus franchisee mode l has helped KFC to make and sustain a great trade mark and brand name. Zhang, Lawrence Anderson (2015) state in their literary work that franchising model involves and benefit three primary stakeholders, the franchisor, the franchisee and the customers. The franchising model creates employment opportunities and generates revenue which help the government and the investors respectively. KFC partners with franchisees all over the world which generates revenue for both making it one of the most sought after international franchisors in the world (Kacker et al., 2016). Rhou, Singal and Koh (2016) state that today franchisor model followed by KFC has transcended the profit earning motive and are actively promoting social development. KFC necessitates its franchisees to take part in social initiatives which promotes strengthening of their brand image. The international fast food chain is already working with the United Nations and helping it to combat hunger and poverty. It is working with several governments supporting their initiatives to bring about socia l development. KFC provides the same meal quality that comes with a diverse menu, focusing on the chicken rather instead of the hamburgers. KFC have been broadening their menu assortment over a certain period of time, adjusting its menu to the local tastes. KFCs scale of production has been associated with cost savings procedures for a standardized menu; the idea being the larger the scale of production, the lower the cost allocated for per menu. Successful chains of franchisee generally begin with the proper business model, proceeding with accretion of the exact scale and scope within the proper locations, until they have reaching the optimum saturation level of the market. The franchising model of operation has allowed KFC to spread its business all over the world. The company is a public company which can generate huge capital from the market using its brand value as a security to the investors(kfc.com, 2017). The company is able to hold its high brand value owing to the high revenue it earns from the chain of franchisees it has all over the world. It is no doubt that the company is looking forward to increase its franchisee chain which has a great future (yum.com, 2017). The franchisees provide the important information about the changing customer tastes and preference to the franchisor. The franchisor can introduce the product lines according to the tastes of the markets in question to satisfy the customers better. For example, KFC provides burgers wraps, chicken, all in the box, buckets, salads sauces, side dishes, desserts and kids items as menu in Germany. The same fast food chain offers make your own bucket (MYOB), chicken, burgers, rice bowlz, snacks and beverages. The different food items actually cater to the needs of the markets like India is consumed both as a part of staple diet and fast food dishes. These product differentiation strategies combined with the great product and marketing maximizes customer satisfaction. The combination of items offered by KFC through its franchisees at affordable prices increase the value to customers money. It is no doubt that fast food chains like KFC enjoys a huge customer loyalty in the market. The fast food chain offers total product which maximizes customer satisfaction. The customers can distinguish the distinct taste and quality of KFC from its competitors. Thus, franchising model helps the multinational fast food chains like KFC to sell their total products in the whole world and earn high profit. This market strategies of KFC has led to the success of the franchisee model of the fast food chain internationally. Franchising is a very successful business model and foreign expansion strategy. The essence of this model is not restricted to mutual profit anymore. The model is capable of maximization the value of the key stakeholders which has led to its success and adoption by the international companies like KFC. It offers high quality products, thus benefitting the customers. The franchisee model helps the international fast food chain to market its product all over the world. The products are of high quality and follow the high brand value of KFC. KFC promotes its products through its franchisees and advertises its value enhancing products. The marketing strategy of KFC through its franchisee chain has led to generating high profit for both the parties. Conclusion: The strong marketing strategy and the alignment of products with it results in high customer satisfaction. The company no doubt has a huge consumer base worldwide to love to consume KFC products. Restaurants have been successfully expanding in the global basis along with locally with the use of the franchisee model. For instance, KFC, Taco Bell and McDonalds having been making the best use of this franchise model. In this franchise business sculpt, the franchisor and the franchisee have been entering into the contractual conformity in selling the branded products of the franchisor. It is the franchisee who takes the lumber of improving the restaurant, overseeing the regular operations along with managing of the cost for administering the restaurant. Due to the elimination of the operational cost, the margins are generally elevated for the franchisor. The benefits for making use of this model is to take in the opportunity in expanding faster as the franchisee offers the capital in mak ing the restaurant equipped for the purpose of the operations. The franchisor generally faces lower amount of risk if the store is being underperforming. KFC would be having more time in focusing on the product and operational research and spending of less amount of time on the purpose of execution. As the restaurant is being owned by the franchisee who is generally the highest motivated part in making the restaurant a success, it eradicates the issue of agency. The franchise is as good as the boss of the restaurant, whose capital is generally being employed in the restaurant. The only downside of this model that KFC might find is the company having less power over the work procedure of the management. References: 2016 Yum! Brands Annual Report. (2017). Yum.com. Market Orientation and Business Performance – MyAssignmenthelp.com Question: Discuss about the Market Orientation and Business Performance. Answer: Introduction QuiznosSub Sandwich Restaurants arefamous for their Toasted Sandwiches and other build-your-own subs as well as soups and salads. Their headquarters is in Denver, Colorado established since 1981. They filed for bankruptcy back in 2014 as they were running out of business meanwhile Subway and Potbelly were making their way to the top. Quiznos had around 5000 stores in the United States back in the early 2000s and they were at their peak but then later on, around 2000 of their outlets were closed dues to recession and competition. This report shall discuss the marketing strategies of Quiznos and their flaws (Davenport et al. 2014). Coming back from its bankruptcy, Quiznos started making some changes in their advertising strategies. They started splitting their budgets between print media and digital marketing. They have been more inclined towards the print media advertising rather than digital marketing. The benefits derived out of these digital platforms have pushed a lot of brands towards success. Although recently they have been trying to emphasize on digital media more than the print media, their strategies have not been up to the mark and they are losing the race to their competitors. Their target audience includes male and female from the age of 18 to 34. The primary target audience is the middle class white collar segment which is the largest segment of class in the United States (McAlister et al. 2016). Quiznos have to understand the needs of their customer and figure out a better way to reach out to their potential customers like other companies have been doing in the recent past. Framing a better marketing strategy on how to make the most out of the digital media should be their primary concern. This report shall discuss about the areas where Quiznos have been struggling as compared to other companies like their social media campaigns and strategies. The Quiznos website is not really that attractive as compared to Subways website. Quiznos did not really focus on the fact that their website needs to be attractive, user friendly and offers deals that draws potential visitors. In todays world, the digital marketing tools need to be used in the maximum possible ways. The marketing strategies followed by Quiznos are a little dull and lacks that appealing factor that a product needs as far as the reach is concerned (Parente, D. and Strausbaugh-Hutchinson 2014). While analysing their social media platforms like for example, their Facebook page, Quiznos are not really that active with their branding on the social media. The number of likes Quiznos has, the difference is a story in itself. Analysis their Facebook page, Quiznos has just around 1.4 Million likes shows how far behind Quiznos are in terms of digital marketing and reaching out to people. Quiznos needs to make sure they are not staying behind and generate that buzz. The shifting of print media era to digital marketing was going to be a major factor for most of the brands out there. Quiznos had to make sure they are not staying behind but they could not manage to generate that buzz that other brands did. A company needs to explore all its options when it comes to marketing their products. They need to offer new schemes to their customers so as to keep them hooked to their sandwiches and other food products. The new brands on the other hand kept their customers attracted and offered various deals with their subs. Quiznos will have to recover a lot and follow the current marketing trend so as to utilise their resources in a better way. Digital marketing is a very brilliant tool only if it has been used in such manner (Lee et al. 2015). The marketing strategies followed by subway are quite sharp and targets their audience unlike Quiznos. Subway makes sure that they are posting enough to reach out as much as possible. If you compare the number of likes Subway has got on their social media page with the number of likes Quiznos has, the difference is a story in itself. While Subway managed to get approximately 25 Million likes on their Facebook page, Quiznos has just around 1.4 Million likes. For instance, Subway has been offering toys for kids in their every meal. This attracts a lot of kids obviously alongwith their parents which seems to be very smart move and Quiznos is not doing anything of this sort. Subways marketing team has a brilliant way of making a comeback offering something new to their customers where as Quiznos is still using their old tagline. Conclusion Conclusively, it is quite evident that Quiznos are way behind in terms of their digital marketing strategies and they need to work a lot on their marketing strategies. People nowadays are spending more time online than going out. The customers are not going come, you have to reach out to them and Quiznos need to learn that from Subway. They need to be more active on their social media platforms so as to cover up the gap they have been dealing with. References McAlister, L., Srinivasan, R., Jindal, N. and Cannella, A.A., 2016. Mohandas K. Ghandi essays

Mohandas K. Ghandi essays As Mohandas K. Gandhi once said, Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948), called Mahatma (Great Soul), was a small man who had a big heart. He was Indias leader in its successful struggle to liberate itself from British colonialism. His love for humanity and his will to uplift all people against the oppression of apartheid showed in his many public and personal demonstrations. He was a man who was easily likeable and highly respected, unless of course, it was your cause that he was fighting against. He spoke of truth, peace and unity among many other things. What made Gandhis movement extraordinary is that it functioned without political influence, economic resources, or military power of any kind. Gandhis guiding principle was Satyagraha, which means non-cooperation and nonviolent passive resistance. He was highly influential to many people in India and worldwide for a variety of reasons. One notable person in American history w ho adopted the Mahatmas teachings was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King used Gandhis teachings to fight against racism in America during the civil-rights era. Gandhi greatly influenced me because he stood firmly behind his beliefs, which in turn taught me to fight for what I believe is right. Gandhi had many beliefs that many of us can relate to. As a lawyer in South Africa, he learned that he was trusted with his work more when he looked for the hearts of both prosecutor and defendant, active in honesty. He longed to serve people in a meaningful way. Gandhi was impacted by the way he saw his fellow Indians were being treated, living as repressed slaves. He soon found that the more he simplified his life, the more time he would have to devote to community service. Gandhi continued to simplify his life, giving up all forms of compensation including gifts and stopped dressing as an Englishman....

Exploring the perceptions and experiences of young people leaving in Essay

Exploring the perceptions and experiences of young people leaving in care in UK - Essay Example The demise of seven year old Maria Colwell in 1973 in 1973 prompted the establishment of the modern care system. In England and Wales, the care system is guided by the Children’s Act of 1989 while in Northern Ireland it is based on the Children order of 1995. In Scotland the guiding framework is the Children’s Act of 1995. The Children Act of 1989 has witnessed numerous amendments after the death of eight year old child in 2000. The legal framework of the child care system is the Children’s Act of 2004 which provides the expected outcomes of the care system like the need to stay safe, enjoy and achieve, stay healthy, positive economic well-being and the need of positive contribution to the society. The agencies which are involved in the care system have the duty and obligation of sharing information and processes to improve the safety and the well-being of the children under the child care system (Ward H, Holmes, and Soper 2008). The composition of the children n eeds and ages indicate the limitations inherent in the current care system. Child development researchers have pointed out that the psychological health of the child is influenced by the important character traits and skills which the children learn at their early age like empathy and self-regulation which the care system should strive to achieve. An efficient care system should provide stable psychological development and placement which results to good parenting and emphasis on the children needs. High ratios of staff turnover are counterproductive since they affect the stability of the relationships in the care system. The ability to stay in the same school without disruptions assists in academic attainments of the children under the care system. Certain emotional behaviors like confusion affect the ability of the children to cope with the challenging environment in the care system in the UK (Stillwell 2009). Literature Review Children in the UK enter the care system for numerous reasons and have different characteristics and needs. Over the last forty years, the number admitted in the care system has fallen significantly which has been attributed to few children joining the care system and the massive drop outs from the care centers (Corsaro 2006). Preliminary studies indicate a lot of disadvantages among the care population. The placement of children in the care system considers the age and the unique needs of the child with majority of the children joining the system being over the age of ten years (Stein 2006). Evidence suggests that many of these children already have physical health complications and high mental problems at the time of their admission to the care system (Corsaro 2006). The purpose of the child care system has attracted a heated debate with some policy makers citing the need to protect the children from undesirable influence while other pointing out the need of the need of the ideal family reunification (Chase, Simon and Jackson 2006). The use of the care system has been centered on the need to support families and allow children to return to their birth parents and also the need to safeguard the children beyond their birth parents (Woodhead and Montgomery 2003). The children’s Act 1989 lays down some principles, powers and duties which the agencies involved in child care system must follow like the duty to

How and how extensivley did German Nationalism grow between 1848-71 Essay

How and how extensivley did German Nationalism grow between 1848-71 - Essay Example 1 Friedrich List is placed among the leading economists of modern times. He strongly rejected the motion of abstract validity of economic doctrines through careful examination of accepted views and rejection of anything without practical value. He opposed the principle of cosmopolitanism in the economic system especially the doctrine of free trade. 2 Though he recognized the importance of the work of Adam Smith and the classical school of economics in assuring industrial and commercial supremacy of England in the first industrial renovation, list deemed that work unsuitable for Germany. He rejected the parallelism imposed by Adam Smith between the economic conduct of the individual and that of a nation and asserted that the special interests of the individual members of the nation would not necessarily lead to the highest good of the nation as a whole.3 Hans Kohn described list as father of German economic nationalism but at the same time as one of the most extreme of Pan-German imperialists. Reasons for his judgment may be in the transformations of German political life from the unsuccessful liberal attempt to unify the Germanies in the revolution of 1848 to the blood and iron policy of Otto Von Bismarck. In the struggle between a steadily intensifying nationalism in the Bismackian power-mold and the weakening German liberalism, list choose the side which world eventually be led by Bismarck.4 List predicted that European communities would think in terms of the creation of larger markets as a stimulus to economic growth and political integration was linked together. As a zealous German patriot, List looked forward to European economic unification eventually under Germany auspices. As stated by Roussakis he was sceptical of the economic viability of other nations in the continent especially in the face of British economic competition. The 1850’s political framework and its qualitative

Recommendation After the overall marketing research regarding this company, we would make some recommendation about the product, market development, marketing technique, public promotion and sales rules and regulation. Humorous Speech by an Old Friend of the Groom (Bridegroom) :: Wedding Toasts Roasts Speeches

Humorous Speech by an Old Friend of the Groom (Bridegroom) Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. On behalf of the bridesmaids, I would like to thank Michael for his kind words, and I have to say they were absolutely wonderful and have done an excellent job today - I mean the bridesmaids, not the words. Now, it's customary in these speeches to tell a story about the bachelor’s (stag) party, but in this case it won't be possible. That's because Michael has insisted on having his stag party after the wedding. So instead, I was going to tell you about a night out in the big city that Michael and I recently had, which involved beer, bad food and Michael bent over the toilet all night. But this is Magdalene’s day as well, and I don't want to ruin it with Michael's vulgarity. So I've decided to look elsewhere for my material. I started by writing down everything I could think of that Michael and I have done over the 23 years we've been friends (mates). But even this wasn't particularly fruitful, as a lot of it would have got Michael strung up by his mom (mum), some of it would have got me strung up by my mom (mum) and some of it simply involved Michael stringing himself up with a couple of vacuum cleaners within easy reach. So, as it was quite challenging coming up with anything of real substance to tell you about Michael, I thought I’d explain how our bride and groom got together. ‘The romance began,’ as Magdalene describes it, ‘after an outing to the cinema was arranged with five or six mutual friends. But on the night, only Michael and I could make it. We enjoyed each other's company so much we went out together every evening for the rest of the week.’ ‘The romance began,’ as Michael describes, ‘after Magdalene individually bribed six people to pull out of a trip to the cinema so she could finally have an evening alone with me to curse me with her love spell.’ There also seems to be some confusion over which film they saw together that night. Magdalene remembers it to be 'Demolition Man'. Michael remembers it as 'Free Willy'. Despite meeting Magdalene, Michael didn’t desert me and we pursued our interests in gambling, excessive drinking, Playstation and being sick a lot. For me, the most significant moment during this time was Michael getting his ear pierced - even back then he was preparing for marriage - experiencing pain, hurt and buying jewellery.

Karen Olsson’s Up Against Wal-Mart Essay

In â€Å"Up Against Wal-Mart† by Karen Olsson, she finds the truth about how Wal-Mart treats its customers and more importantly how the million dollar company treats its employees. In this essay, Olsson strongly believes that Wal-Mart keeps its stores understaffed and their employees overworked and underpaid, with minimal options for reasonable benefits. Olsson begins with an individual employee, Jennifer McLaughlin, who is a mother of one child, and is currently employed with Wal-Mart in Paris, Texas. She is a very hard worker and puts in a lot of effort every day. But she is not able to afford life, with the amount that the company pays her. Health insurance is too much to afford on her wage, so she has to rely on government assistance to give her child the things he needs. She is forced to work over time, is underpaid and also treated unfairly. According to Olsson, â€Å"On a given shift McLaughlin might man a register, hop on a mechanical lift to retrieve something from a high shelf, catch fish from a tank, run over to another department to help locate an item, restock the shelves, dust off the bike racks, or field questions about potting soil and lawn mowers† (607). In other words, Olsson points out that Wal-Mart does not hire enough workers and also overwork its employees. The other issue is the company Wal-Mart is not unionized. The workers at Wal-Mart have started to try to create a union. But a union at Wal-Mart was never formed due to the company’s anti-union group that created by Wal-Mart, which employees who voted for the union were fired. Olsson states that â€Å"Wal-Mart has responded to the union drive by trying to stop workers from organizing—sometimes in violation of federal labor law† (609). Here she proves that Wal-Mart is against the union and will do what it can to stop one from forming. This essay shows that Wal-Mart’s rapid growth rate and lack of change in fair treatment for its employees is only creating more insubstantial jobs for poor people. The topic of Olsson’s opinions about that Wal-Mart treats its employees badly can be approached from several different angles due to its complexity. Some people seem to think that Wal-Mart is bad for the poor people while others tend to consider that Wal-Mart actually helps the poor people. Upon a close examination of both sides of this issue, I have also developed my own point of view. Personally, I disagree with Olsson’s view that Wal-Mart is bad for poor people because she lacks for hearing opinions from both sides. One reason I cannot support the Olsson’s view is Wal-Mart’s â€Å"every day low price.† Wal-Mart’s low cost of goods saves its consumers billions per year. It not only presents job opportunities for poor families, but offers them discounts on food and necessities. Even though Wal-Mart employees are paid low wages, the low cost of food and other basics makes up for the low wages. For me, Wal-Mart in fact helps the lower income families in the world because their prices are more affordable. Wal-Mart’s prices are helping them purchase more food and basic necessities for their families than they would be able to purchase at other retail stores. How to Write a Political Science Research Paper

How to Write a Political Science Research Paper A good Political science research paper is one that conveys the findings of the research in a way that can conveniently and very easily be understood by the reader or the targeted audience. Many things go into writing a good research paper and one such important issue is organization. Without organization, a reader is likely to get confused about the contents of the paper, and this means that it will be next to impossible to write a good research paper if organization of the research paper is not taken seriously. If one does not document the results of the research in an organized way, it also means that the findings of the research will be as good as lost to everyone except the individual that carried out the research. A typical political research paper should be organized right from the abstract and introduction paragraphs to the conclusion and bibliography pages, respectively. The introduction of the essay should be organized in a way to enable a reader to quickly take note of the purpose of the research and the main issues being explored in the research paper. The body of the paper should be organized in a way to provide a good background, some of the main facts being discussed, a literature review section, a methodology section, a results section, and a discussion of the results section. The conclusion of the research paper should also be organized so it describes the issues determined in the essay and this is why recapping the main issues explored in the research paper is important. Apart from organization, the other thing very important to essay writing is the style of writing. In most cases, the instructor or examiner of the research paper makes a point of letting the writer know the style to be used in writing the paper. However, if no style is indicated, it is always recommended that one uses the American Psychological Association (APA) style. As one writes the research paper using this style, one should always strive to write a well-organized paper that clearly presents the facts, theories discussed, and the analysis of the findings. Also, the sentences should be clear and contain words that can very easily be understood. This does not mean that one should completely avoid the use of certain vocabularies; rather; one should limit the use of vocabularies and onl y make use of the necessary terminologies. If one uses too many vocabularies, the reader may not easily understand the contents of the Political Science research paper and this will defeat the paper’s main purpose.

MLA Referencing †Citing a YouTube Video

MLA Referencing – Citing a YouTube Video MLA Referencing – Citing a YouTube Video As Bob Dylan once sang, the times they are a-changin’. And while Bob was referring to the political climate in the 1960s, the statement applies equally to referencing sources in a college paper. These days, for example, you can cite YouTube videos in your work alongside books and journal articles. Were sure Bob would have sang about it if YouTube had been a thing in the 60s, though. But how do you do this exactly? In this post, we’ll look at how to cite YouTube and other online videos using the MLA referencing system, including both in-text citations and the list entry. In-Text Citations for a YouTube Video In MLA referencing, you cite print sources by giving the author’s surname and a page number. This isn’t possible when citing a video, though, as there are no page numbers to cite! What you do have is a time code or timestamp. This is the point in the video you want to cite, usually given in hours, minutes, and seconds. For example, we could cite a YouTube video like this: Defamiliarization is a key aspect of literature (Rugnetta 00:07:40). In this case, we’re citing a moment 7 minutes and 40 seconds into a video by Mike Rugnetta. Sometimes, though, it might not be easy to tell who to cite as the creator. In this case, for instance, we’ve used the presenter of the video, but in others you may want to cite a director or producer. The important thing is to use the same name in citations as you do in the list. The basic format for a YouTube video in an MLA list is: Author Surname, First Name. â€Å"Title of Video.† Platform/Website, uploaded by Username/Organization, date of upload, URL. In practice, then, the video we cited above would be referenced like this: Rugnetta, Mike. â€Å"BUT WAIT: Is Bob Dylan’s Work Really Literature?† YouTube, uploaded by PBS Idea Channel, November 2 2016, www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF7m44ORlRM. As shown above, you do not need to include the â€Å"http://† bit of the URL here. Missing Source Information You may sometimes find it difficult to find information for an online video source. If this occurs, simply include as much detail as possible so that the reader can identify the video based on your list. If you cannot find a name of the author of a video, for example, you can use the uploader’s name instead. As long as you also provide a valid URL in the full reference, this should be enough for the reader to find the video cited.

Why Do People Go to School Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Why Do People Go to School - Essay Example That is exactly why people send their children to school. They want to see them succeed as lawyers, doctors, artists, engineers and all the jobs that pay well. But I don’t agree with Paul when he says that when children go to school wearing uniforms, they look like as if they are being drafted into something. To a certain point in the school career, children need to learn the basics, that is necessary. No one is pressing and molding children into robots by sending them to schools. There is a reason why there is a greater number of successful people who went to school than those who didn’t. While at school, children don’t only delve into their books, there is a whole package of school education. For instance, the extra-curricular activities are not directly related with job hunting but, they are necessary for overall grooming and development of body and mind, which is something people get as a side dish when they get a school education. When a person goes to school, he meets new people, makes new friends, deals with them in dorms. School education teaches students how to meet deadlines on their assignments and juggle huge workloads of various subjects. That is why when an employer hires a person who has gone to school knows that that person is good at time management and multitasking. Paul Murray probably has the same idea about education and learning as John Holt. Unschooling is a term coined by John Holt in referring to custom learning. This type of learning has a purpose not for the schools or college admins but for the students who are learning those things. There is no imposing of any kind on the child. If he is interested in hot rods, his interest might lead him to learn the mechanics of an engine or even building a complete automobile.   Considering a hypothetical situation, had Rex Walls had sent his children to regular schools, he would be had to get a decent regular job like everyone else and his children would not have to steal lunch from other schoolmates and root trash cans for food. But demonstrating Unschooling, what Rex and her wife taught their children about literature, art, music, history, astronomy, geology, and mathematics added so much useful knowledge to their children’s learning but character training was completely absent from. An d that is why such an intelligent and knowledgeable family had to live their lives like nomads. I don’t disagree with Paul Murray and John Holt on the basic idea about education and it is a fact that deep down inside, no one wants to go to school as it is hard work. But I need more pragmatic solutions to their idea of not going to school or Unschooling. Loitering around, doing nothing, watching movies, playing in the parks and sleep when tired, sounds like a dream life but imagine if everyone starts doing this, then there would be no more technicians and engineers to run a TV station. There would be no journalists and writers to play interesting news on TV and publish interesting books and magazines. Like food and water, knowledge or education is the basic necessity of a successful life and school education is one safe way to achieve that.

The paper will be any of the onw i suggest you to choose - Essay Example Furthermore, there is a large dog and two dwarves positioned at the background of the picture. Another man has been positioned in the rear of the room who is leaving the room and there is a reflection of Philip IV with his queen Mariana of the Austria. In addition, the paintings of Jean-Baptiste Greuze, â€Å"The Village Bride† is a sentimental and moralizing painting. It is believed to have appealed the bourgeois during the mid 18 century in Paris. According to Facos, this article was initiated during the resentment of aristocratic moral decadences and the impervious attitudes over the rest of the world (Facos 34). The painting depicts a moment of dowry exchange which runs from the hands of the father to that of the bridegroom as recording by the public is undertaken. In the painting the practice is witnessed by the other family members. The most important part of the painting is the middle where we have the exchange of money. More so, the painting depicts that the father is the only person talking while the other family members have been rendered with different emotions and reactions. Furthermore, some family members have been displayed in the little vignette of the painting depicting some gestures. Therefore, any contemp orary viewer can easily connect the drama. In the paintings of Vela’zquez, has been linked to the Baroque illusionism. The real meaning of this style is creation of a world of illusions which is aimed at confusing the boundaries between reality and art. Foucault brings an impression that the artist uses tapestry in several senses, first as a tribute to Titian and Paul Rubens who are remembered as members in the nobility (Foucault 4 ). Furthermore, the use of tapestry evokes emotions and story of a mortal in relation to the gods, mortal was better than gods, this is used as an allegory to the mortal. Therefore, this painting can be referred to as a liberal

Rational Frame Theory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Rational Frame Theory - Essay Example This paper looks at the concept of relational frame theory based on the tutorial developed by Dr Eric J. Fox, Ph.D, in his website. It will be based on the explanation of a hierarchical representation (given below) of Dr Fox’s views on this area. According to Dr Fox, language can create both problems and solutions. Any situation, whether it is positive or negative, is directly related to the language and emotion used. It can be used to instruct, to give praise or heap insults. It can be used to judge people and it can be used to make laws. It can be used to educate people and can be used to dictate actions. Words used in a certain context can even result in violence and wars. On the other extreme, it has the ability to bring about peace among nations. These few examples of the power of language show how much it can influence a society and its individuals. It should be stated here that language studies can help in understanding human behavior and actions to a large extent. It can help psychologists to provide solutions to problems faced by individuals. Traditional theories on the field believe that words used in language have symbolism and generativity. Symbolism refers to the power of a word to signify other meanings or thin gs even though a particular word has a specific meaning. For example the word fire may evoke different emotions in people. For one person fire can mean warmth, for another it can mean pain, and for a third person it can mean food. This power of the word can have diverse effects on people in the context they are used. A combination of words, in other words a sentence, has generativity. According to Dr Fox, â€Å"generativity means that we can create and understand an infinite number of meaningful sentences or utterances† (Fox, 2002).The sentence ‘An apple is a blue fruit that is found in the North Pole’ may be absurd and incorrect, but it has meaning. Development or environmental injustice Essay Example for Free

Development or environmental injustice Essay What does it really take to experience development? What are the defining criteria for development? Is development quantitatively measured or qualitatively evaluated? What are the key indicators of a developing or developed country? The answers depend on the person’s priority and preference. The expansion of metropolitan areas has been referred to as urban development by those who are after the material indicators of development- high rise buildings, wider highways, more cars and more parks. For those who are concerned with the long-term environmental and health effects of urbanization, they call it urban sprawl. For the purpose of having a common point of reference, let me use 1Dr. Howard Frumkin’s definition of urban sprawl: â€Å"the complex pattern of land use, transportation and social and economic development. † This complex pattern requires the extension of urban areas to rural areas, and thus converting the latter to urbanized locality. Urbanization implies vast forest and agricultural lands to be converted to different land uses. Sad to say, the list includes recreational facilities and parks which, for investment and environmental considerations are to be of least priority. Extensive roads construction which provides spaces for suburban dwellers to drive a car just to buy a pack of cigarette in the next block, is not suppose to be of immediate consideration. Besides this qualitative indicators of poor urban sprawl considerations, there are environmental threats of urban sprawl that are needed to be evaluated and be given high priority by the development advocates, as it concerns life of the present and future generations. 2â€Å"Automobile has been a prerequisite to urban sprawl. † (J. E. Anderson) The most adverse effect of heavy reliance to automobiles is obviously air pollution. In the United States, 3about 25% of all trips are shorter than one mile of these, 75% are by car. Another related 4study revealed that only 1% of trips in the US are on bicycle and 9% by foot. Do these figures present impressive urban development rates for the US? I am afraid not because the Netherlands has 30% accounting for transportation on bicycle. These facts rather provide proofs that vehicles are the leading source of air pollution. Despite modern environmental standards, urban air quality remains to be greatly affected by the emission of air pollutants from transport. In the 5US alone, 30% of nitrogen oxide and 30% of hydrocarbon emissions are brought about by mobile sources. In addition, 5carbon dioxide emission, which is the end product of burning fuel such as gas, accounts for 80% emissions. Carbon dioxide is the major greenhouse gas, with global warming potential. Needless to explain, development should no be measured quantitatively, that is by the number of cars that are going to and fro the streets of the cities. Rather, development should be measured qualitatively, that how much does it contribute to the quality of life the residents are to experience when programs relative to urban sprawl are push through. Housing development is a part of urban sprawl, which requires forest fragmentation. 6Chet Arnold of the Center for Land-use and Research at the University of Connecticut said forest fragmentation occurs when â€Å"large, continuous forests are divided into smaller blocks, either by roads, clearing for agriculture, urbanization, or other human development. † This means that housing development requires animal populations in the cleared forests to be thrown out of their natural habitats. Destruction of natural habitats accounts for great loss of biodiversity, which results to ecological imbalance. I agree that man deserve to have decent life and part of it is having a more comfortable living. But humans are not the only residents of the earth. We also have to take into consideration the floras and faunas as part of biodiversity. Let us remember that earth creatures are dependent on each other. Humans, being given the capacity to think and understand over the lower forms of life should see things beyond material and short-term comforts that development brings. Urban sprawl in this context alone is clearly an environmental injustice. Water resources are not exempted from the list of natural resources that are directly affected by urban sprawl. As requisite of urban sprawl deforestation brings forth water pollution. This is besides the effects of pollutants that directly come from factories, sewage treatment plants and local wastes, which are typical to urbanized cities. Rainwater that runs through the deforested lands are not effectively absorbed and thus flows downstream. This process results to lesser groundwater recharge, then water supply shortage follows. Added to the list of negative effects of urban sprawl to natural resources are noise pollution, the heat island effect, soil erosion and the declining fertility rates of soils. The main point of all these is that urban sprawl is the root of many environmental injustices. Air pollution, deforestation, water pollution, soil degradation and the destruction of biodiversity are results of a chain reaction from a single step to what others refer to as urban development. What humans failed to do and still refuse to consider is the future. Development projects, of which urban sprawl is a major player, are focused on comforts and pleasures of today and shortly after tomorrow. The next generation should be taken into serious consideration. There are things that still can be undone, but there are things that cannot. Natural resources that were destroyed can still be replaced, but it takes a century to bring them back to where they used to be. By itself, there’s nothing wrong with development. What makes it undesirable is its planner to consider the future. REFERENCES 1. Frumkin, Howard. Urban Sprawl and Public Health. Public Health Reports. May-June 2002 issue. Volume 117. page 201 2. The Lying Witches and the Downfall of Shakespeares Macbeth :: GCSE English Literature Coursework

Lying Witches and the Downfall of Macbeth      Ã‚   A false statement or a statement intended to deceive someone is known as a lie.   Of course, there are many different types of lies. There are those blatant lies that have no truth in them whatsoever, lies of omission, and half-truths.        Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In the Shakespearean play, Macbeth, evil witches deceive their victim, Macbeth, by telling him half-truths about his prophecies.   As a result of this new "half-true" knowledge, Macbeth makes rash decisions that lead him to paranoia, grief, and eventually his downfall.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The first set of prophecies that the witches reveal to Macbeth in act 1, scene 3, stated that Macbeth was to become Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor and finally be crowned king.   They also said, "Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none."   Macbeth was shocked when the first two prophecies came true.   In act 1, scene 3, he spoke of his fears, saying "unfix my hair, and make my seated heart knock at my ribs." In Elizabethan times, witches were known as creatures of the devil, satanic creatures who roam the world to cause destruction and chaos.   But how could devils speak of great truths? Macbeth's new knowledge was then reported to his wife.   He writes about how he will become king.   But how would he do this?   One of Macbeth's rash decisions was to murder the present King.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Macbeth had invited the King and the King's men to his castle to celebrate the victory of the battle that had been won.   That night, while everyone was asleep, Macbeth took a dagger and killed the King. After the murder he became very paranoid.   In act 2, scene 2, he cries: "Didst thou not hear a noise? ...There's one did laugh in's sleep, and one cried `murder!', Methought I heard a voice cry `Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep'...I am afraid to think what I have done; look on't again I dare not."      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Macbeth become king. As a result of his Paranoia, he called upon murderers to execute Banquo, a friend of his that knew about the prophecies.   Paranoia had taken over his life so much that his wife was left out of his plans.   He had become so paranoid, his feelings had become numb. This is shown in act 5, scene 5, when he says: "I have almost forgot the taste of fears: The time has been, my senses would have cool'd to hear a night-shriek.
